On June 6 and 7, 2023, at the Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate (STERI) the University of Palermo will host the international workshop “CULTIVATING THE IDEA OF BIODIVERSITY: The arts and their languages for an ecologist engagement in the public space”. The workshop is divided into 3 main sessions set to start at 2:30pm on June 6 and end at 6:30pm on June 7.

The workshop is prompted by Palermo’s focus on biodiversity as a fil rouge of the research agenda for the National Reconstruction and Resilience Plan funded by NextGenerationEU, in order to explore possible declinations of the concept in a humanistic environment. Since the arts and philosophy have become paramount in rethinking our attitude towards sustainability issues, the workshop addresses a twofold perspective: on the one side, the human approach to biodiversity protection in nature and, on the other side, the enhancement of diversity in society and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles.
Discussing recent contributions of artists and thinkers in this field, the aim of the workshop is to discuss and set the methodological structure and conceptual framework for the reconsideration of biodiversity as a transversal and transdisciplinary feature of sustainable culture and living. Keynote speakers are scholars and artists of international renown such as Emily Brady, Sabrina Lo Brutto, Carolina Fernández-Castrillo, Laura Pitingaro, Gianluca Sarà, Peter Schneemann, Endre Szécsényi, Giuseppe Venturella, and Sasha Vinci.

The first two sessions will be held in English given their methodological scope, while the last session is in Italian since it aims to involve the wider public and present the projects of local artists working on biodiversity topics.
The research event is organized by the Department of Humanities, promoted by EvaNetwork and co-funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, in collaboration with National Biodiversity Future Centre; ELTE Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest; Venice Cluster of the National Doctoral School in Climate Change and Sustainability; Ph.D. in Semiotics: studies on text, discourse, media, culture; Ph.D. in Humanities; PhD Visual Culture; Centro sostenibilità e transizione ecologica Palermo; as well as under the patronage of SIE; IAA; XXV World Congress of Philosophy Rome 2024.

Il 6 e 7 giugno 2023, alla Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate (STERI), l’Università di Palermo ospiterà il workshop internazionale “CULTIVATING THE IDEA OF BIODIVERSITY: The arts and their languages for an ecologist engagement in the public space”. Il workshop è diviso in 3 sessioni principali a partire dalle 14:30 del 6 giugno per terminare alle 18:30 del 7 giugno.

Il workshop è sollecitato dal focus palermitano sulla biodiversità quale filo rosso nel programma di ricerca per il PNRR con fondi NextGenerationEU, al fine di esplorare possibili declinazioni del concetto in campo umanistico. Dal moment oche le arti e la filosofia hanno conquistato uno spazio di primo piano nel ripensamento del nostro atteggiamento rispetto ai temi legati alla sostenibilità, il workshop affronterà una duplice prospettiva: da un lato, l’approccio umano nei confronti della protezione della biodiversità in natura e, dall’altro lato, l’arricchimento della diversità nella società con la promozione di stili di vita sostenibili.
Discutendo il recente contributo di artisti e pensatori in questo campo, lo scopo del workshop è di discutere e approntare la struttura metodologica e la cornice concettuale per una riconsiderazione della biodiversità quale carattere trasversale e transdisciplinare per una cultura e una vita sostenibili. I keynote speakers sono accademici e artisti di fama internazionale, tra cui Emily Brady, Sabrina Lo Brutto, Carolina Fernández-Castrillo, Laura Pitingaro, Gianluca Sarà, Peter Schneemann, Endre Szécsényi, Giuseppe Venturella e Sasha Vinci.

Le prime due sessioni si terranno in inglese in considerazione della loro finalità metodologica, mentre l’ultima sessione si terrà in italiano per coinvolgere un pubblico più ampio e presentare i progetti di artisti del territorio che operano su tematiche legate alla biodiversità.
