In a time of supply chain shortages, increasing costs, and unprecedented demand for low-carbon concrete infrastructure construction, alternatives to portland cement play an important role. Calcium sulfoaluminate, or belitic calcium sulfoaluminate cements (CSA or BCSA) can offer many benefits to use of traditional portland cements including rapid strength development, reduced curing requirements, reduced shrinkage, and drastically lower carbon footprint. Dr. Burris has spent the previous decade working to understand the properties of CSA cements used as both partial and 100% substitutions of OPC in conventional concrete, develop strategies to control their rapid setting, and evaluate their durability when used in a variety of deleterious environments. This talk will provide an introduction to the world of alternative cements with a focus on CSA cements and their possible use as a low carbon alternative in the construction of transportation infrastructure.
