What is it? CILS is a certificate that evaluates the level of Italian linguistic-communicative competence as L2/FL (foreign language). CILS certification is issued by the university for foreigners of Siena and it is recognized by the Italian State according to an agreement with the Foreign office.

The CILS centre is a member of EALTA (European Language Testing Association), an association set up thanks to the loans of the European Community. It deals with language testing and assessment in Europe.

Who is it addressed to? You can enroll for the CILS exam if you are:

-          foreigner

-          Italian citizen who lives abroad (descendant of Italian emigrants)

-          Foreign immigrant in Italy

Moreover

-          There are no limits of age

-          It is not necessary to have particular qualifications

-          It is not necessary to have passed a basic CILS exam

-          You can prepare yourself for the CILS exam according to the most appropriate way to the level characteristics

Validity: the CILS is useful if:

-          If you study Italian

-          If you work and study in contact with the Italian society

-          If you want to measure your competence in Italian

Each CILS level certificates a communicative ability which is useful in different situations and contexts.

Exams  and assessment

In order to have the certificate in one of the six levels, you have to pass an exam which includes the following proofs: oral and written comprehension, oral and written production, grammar, vocabulary and communication skills.

All the proofs are produced and assessed by the Certification Centre of the University for foreigners of Siena, according to the European parameters  set up by the Council of Europe.

In order to have the CILS Certification, you have to obtain the minimum score in all the proofs. If you do not pass all the proofs, you can repeat the proofs you failed within one year from the first exam.

CILS levels

The CILS levels are six:

-          Level A1

-          Level A2

-          Level ONE B1

-          Level TWO B2

-          Level THREE C1

-          Level FOUR C2

These levels describe a linguistic and communicative competence gradually higher.

Each CILS level is independent and complete.

The CILS levels A1 and A2 address those students who are at the beginning of the learning process in Italian. The exam lasts 2 hours. There are modules for:

-           foreigners who live in Italy

-          Foreigners who speak languages that are typologically different from Italian

-          Emigrants’ sons who live abroad

At the level ONE B1 you have to be able to use Italian autonomously and in an appropriate way especially  with regards to the most common everyday life situations. The exam lasts 3 hours.

At the level TWO B2 you have to be able to handle a large variety of everyday life situations especially in the work and study environments. With this certificate the non-European immigrant can enroll himself at Italian universities without taking the Italian competence test.
