Description:

The Telecommunication Group at the Engineering Department of the University of Palermo pursues research activities and didactic activities about the study, design and deployment (hardware and software) of systems devices to transfer and process signals and data. Exemplary innovative applications which require the development of telecommunications systems able to provide wide bandwidth, low latency, high reliability and security, are the industry 4.0, the autonomous driving, the tactile internet, the virtual and augmented reality, as well as the mass deployment of Internet of Things.

The main research activities of the group are the following:

  • Cellular network evolutions and 5g:

Innovative technologies for the implementation of programmable networks and devices, able to reconfigure the wireless access stack as a function of the network context and application scenarios and to optimize the coexistence with heterogeneous technologies even in unlicensed bands. Design of wireless testbeds for the experimental validation of innovative wireless solutions.

  • IoT Technologies             

Within this activity, the group is working on different directions: i) low-cost and low-energy technologies, such as LoRa, for applications such as smart metering and environmental monitoring; ii) technologies for underwater communications, based on reprogrammable acoustic modems; iii) technologies for visible light communications and integration with radiofrequency technologies; iv) evolutions of wireless local area networks, such as WiFi networks, for ultra-broadband applications.

  • IoT Applications

Optimization of complex systems, by means of model-based or data-based machine learning approaches, in several application scenarios, such as smart grid, smart agriculture, smart farm, etc. Localization of mobile devices, even for emergency scenarios, by working on computer-based and radio-based techniques.
