PTUA LM-48             

2 years, 120 ECTS

432 hours of workshops, 13 courses, open access

Urban, Regional and Environmental Planning is a Master Degree Course (also known in Italy as 2nd Cycle Degree). It is the natural follow-up for the Town Planning and Urban Studies Bachelor programme (L-21), but it can also be accessed from other degree courses after verifying the skills and competences of incoming students. The Master Degree in Urban, Regional and Environmental Planning trains experts in urban design and sustainable development of territories.

The territorial planners will undergo a range of training, from the safeguarding and promotion of cultural heritage, the protection of ecosystem balance, to urban regeneration to smart cities planning.

Graduates have the opportunity to learn about technical management activities, including evaluation, strategy and feasibility of urban and territorial plans and projects.

Graduates are the reference figures for policies and projects of urban and territorial transformation, acting as mediators between the political sphere, social dynamics and territorial realities.

Spatial Planning

entirely in English.
The course, inspired by the long-standing Italian tradition of urban and territorial design, looks at future issues related to the planning and design of cities and territories.

AESOP CERTIFICATE OF QUALITY

In July 2019, the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) awarded the L-21 and LM-48 Courses of Study "Quality Recognition (QR)" certification.
AESOP's Quality Recognition (QR) program represents a prestigious international initiative to support quality and the sharing of best practices for the improvement of teaching and pedagogy among planning schools. The main motto of AESOP QR is to promote excellence in learning and education.
AESOP QR provides for rigorous evaluation on the teaching methods and content of Courses of Study that decide to voluntarily undergo the process.
And, therefore, the recognition to the Course of Study LM-48 represents an important certification of quality of international importance.
In particular, in the evaluation process the Master's Degree Course in Territorial, Urban and Environmental Planning - LM-48 has distinguished itself

  • on a pedagogical level, for the integration of laboratories with theoretical teachings and of traditional techniques with more interactive and cooperative ones;
  • for the characterizing contents on policy making and management combined with skills in urban design.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

The title of the Master Degree graduate is Doctor in Territorial, Urban and Environmental Planning and assumes the professional qualification of Territorial Planner, pursuant to DPR 328/2001, after State Examination and registration with the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservationists, in the relative registers.
The Territorial Planner can work in a freelance capacity, as well as in both public or private organisation. The skills are mainly related to the interpretation of trends and outcomes of the transformation of cities and territories, the drafting of plans and projects from the urban scale to the vast area, the definition of strategies for the sustainable development of territorial contexts and social and cultural promotion of the settled communities, and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

 

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The privileged interlocutors of planners are the subjects, both public and private, that operate in the field of urban and territorial transformations, infrastructures and transportation, landscape and the atmosphere, which the Degree Programmes in Planning discuss with in constant consultations for the updating of employment opportunities.
The meeting between demand and offer of professional training is constantly monitored through regular consultations with the Sicilian Region and its various Departments, the new territorial articulations at the provincial level, the Sicilian Municipalities and the Municipality of Palermo in particular, the Professional Orders, the Superintendence of Cultural and Environmental Heritage, the Park Bodies of Natural Parks and Archaeological Regional Parks, the managers of UNESCO sites, trade unions, Confindustria, ANCE, the Istituto Autonomo Case Popolari, the Harbour Authorities, the private institutions and the third sector.

 

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS

Graduates of the Master Degree (PTUA) can enrol to Section A of the Italian Association of "Architects, planners, landscape architects and conservators” (after passing a State exam). The degree also gives access, in addition to the qualifications and internships provided for by current legislation, to the State examinations for the professions of Agrotechnician, Surveyor Graduate, Agricultural Expert and Industrial Expert. The internship period, where prescribed, can be carried out in whole or in part during the course of studies in accordance with the procedures established in agreements concluded between the Orders or Colleges and Universities (DPR 328/2001).
