(28/07/2026) Nota: E' attivo un nuovo accordo Erasmus+ tra l'Università degli Studi di Palermo e l'Université de Nîmes (Francia). L'accordo prevede la possibilità di svolgere periodi di mobilità per ricerca e formazione presso l'Ateneo francese per gli studenti del Dottorato di Ricerca con disponibilità complessiva di 3 mobilità per anno. Per partecipare è richiesta una conoscenza linguistica di livello B2 in inglese e/o francese. L'iniziativa rappresenta un'importante opportunità per sviluppare collaborazioni scientifiche internazionali, ampliare le competenze di ricerca e favorire la costruzione di reti accademiche europee. Mattia Biondo, PhD candidate in Technologies and Science for Human Health (39th Cycle), participated in the 98th National Congress of the Italian Society of Experimental Biology (SIBS), held in Messina (16–18 April 2026), where he received the Best Oral Presentation Award in the Extracellular Vesicles session for his presentation entitled Perinatal tissue-derived extracellular vesicles for diabetic wound healing: a translational proposal, focusing on the potential therapeutic application of extracellular vesicles. He also participated in the 9th National Conference “Dies Panormitanae atque Magnae Graeciae – Clinical and Healthcare Complexity" (Palermo, 22–24 May 2026), where he was awarded the Best Oral Presentation Award for his presentation entitled Implicazioni terapeutiche dell’attivazione termogenica mediata dagli agonisti del recettore del GLP-1: studio ex vivo su cellule staminali derivate da tessuto adiposo, in which he presented the preliminary results of a study conducted within his research group.

Silvia La Scala, dottore di ricerca in Tecnologie e Scienze per la Salute dell’Uomo presso l’Università degli Studi di Palermo, è componente del team Fenòlea, progetto selezionato e premiato a livello internazionale nell’ambito della Innovator Fellowship 2025 di EIT Food, svoltasi a Porto. Il progetto, sviluppato durante il percorso di formazione imprenditoriale EmpowerHer, è focalizzato sulla valorizzazione sostenibile dei sottoprodotti della filiera olivicola-olearia. Fenòlea è stato infine presentato a investitori e stakeholder nel corso del primo Investor Day dell’Università di Palermo, tenutosi presso Palazzo Steri.

Gabriele Lo Buglio, PhD student in Technology and Sciences for Human Health at the University of Palermo and enrolled in double-degree program with the University of Copenhagen, participated: - Meeting Intersezioni of the Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SIB), held in Messina (3-5 October, 2024), presenting the work “Functionalized Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Strategy in Solid Tumors”. - 97th National Congress of the Italian Society of Experimental Biology (SIBS), held in Palermo (10-13 April, 2025), presenting the work “Primary Tumor Cells and Microvascular Fragment Interactions in 3D Models of Cancer Angiogenesis”. For both congresses, he has received the Best Oral Presentation Award.

Flaviana Falci, PhD student in Technology and Sciences for Human Health at University of Palermo, has was awarded the “Runners-Up – Best Oral Presentation” prize at the Simmons’ Surgery Research Day organized by the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh for her work “Mandrel-less Fabrication of biomimetic engineered chordae tendineae for mitral valve repair”, developed within her PhD program project. This annual event combines the prestigious Richard L. Simmons Lecture with a full day of oral and poster presentations, highlighting cutting-edge clinical and basic science research conducted by trainees, fellows, residents, and PhD students within the Department of Surgery.

Silvia La Scala, PhD candidate in Technology and Sciences for Human Health at University of Palermo, has been selected as one of the winners of the prestigious Innovator Fellowship 2025, promoted by EIT Food (https://apply.eitfood.eu/en_GB/courses/course/171-innovator-fellowship-2025). The EIT Food fellowship supports young researchers in developing entrepreneurial and innovation-oriented skills to address key challenges in the agri-food sector. These talents will progress through team formation, business idea development and pitching sessions supported by mentors. This experience will culminate in a final pitch event, where groups will present their business proposition in a big European city in the presence of a panel of innovative food system specialists. The awarded project, Fenolea, was developed as part of a team effort during the EmpowerHer entrepreneurial training held in Palermo on 28th and 29th May 2025.

Il Dott. Salvatore Martino Vince l’EMBO Scientific Exchange Grant "Siamo lieti di annunciare che il Dottorando Salvatore Martino è risultato vincitore dell’European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Scientific Exchange Grant per il suo progetto di ricerca sulla metilazione del DNA e il suo coinvolgimento nella segregazione dei cromosomi. Il progetto è stato condotto sotto la supervisione del Prof. Feo e della Dott.ssa Viviana Barra. Questo prestigioso finanziamento internazionale supporta scambi scientifici tra laboratori di diverse nazionalità, promuovendo nuove collaborazioni. Salvatore avrà l'opportunità di svolgere il suo periodo di ricerca presso il laboratorio della Prof.ssa Viji Draviam alla Queen Mary University of London."

First double degree in Technologies and Sciences for human Healt On June 13th, the first dual-degree Ph.D. program in “Technologies and Sciences for Human Health” concluded successfully. Dr. Kleopatra Kalouta defended her thesis titled “Sustainable Biomaterials from Plant Proteins: Green Electrospinning and Applications in Drug Delivery,” earning her Ph.D. from both the University of Palermo and the University of Copenhagen.

"First double degree in Technologies and Sciences for human Healt...:"
Sandra Filiciani was the first PhD graduate in "co-tutela" from the Universidad Abierta Interamericana (Argentina) and the Università degli Studi di Palermo (Italy). On July 4th, Sandra Filiciani, a physician and plastic surgeon, completed her doctorate and became the first PhD student to receive from the University of Palermo (UNIPA; Italy) and the Universidad Abierta Interamericana (UAI; Argentina) a double doctor degree in "cotutela" in Technology and Sciences of Human Health (cycle XXXVI) and in Medicine, respectively. Her research focused on developing a new mesh for breast reconstruction. She conducted the initial stages of the study, manufacturing, and testing at the D'Amore Lab of the RiMed Foundation located within the University of Palermo. After that, the preclinical application took place in Argentina. She was supervised by an Argentine, Dr. Enrique Pedro Gagliardi, MD, PhD, and an Italian tutor, Professor Fabio Caradonna (UNIPA), and co-tutors, Professor Antonio D’Amore (RiMed Foundation). She also received mentorship from Dr. Laura Modica de Mohac, and all friends and colleagues from D'Amore Lab collaborated at every step. Integrative teamwork was crucial to the learning process and achieving results. The collaboration between the PhD in Technology and Sciences of Human Health (cycle XXXVI) coordinated by Prof. Bruno Pignataro (UNIPA) and the PhD in Medicice directed by Prof. Alicia Mattiazzi (UAI) was stimulating, contributed significantly over two years and opened interesting perspectives for future work.

Prestigioso premio da parte della Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. "ll dottorando Emanuele Vitale, al secondo anno di dottorato, è risultato vincitore di un prestigioso premio da parte della Cystic Fibrosis Foundation che ha sede negli USA. In particolare Emanuele, che in questo momento si trova a Philadelphia per svolgere un periodo di ricerca presso il laboratorio del Prof. Barry Cooperman alla UPENN University, ha ricevuto un 2024 Student Traineeship Award. Si tratta di un premio per sovvenzionare un periodo di tirocinio al fine di introdurre gli studenti alla ricerca attraverso la partecipazione a progetti di ricerca rilevanti per la fibrosi cistica.
