LM-6 – HEALTH BIOLOGY

LM 6 – BIOLOGIA DELLA SALUTE

Educational Objectives – Professional Opportunities for Graduates

The 2nd cycle degree course in Health Ecology specifically aims at the acquisition with advanced competences in human biology and in its applications to the bio sanitary field, both in Diagnostics and Nutrition Biology. The coursework is structured to offer advanced knowledge of physiopathological biological processes and research methodologies in the sanitary field as well as of genetic and molecular analysis and preventive biological-sanitary control measures of the nutritional quality of food.

The contents of the courses in Biochemistry and Physiology are strictly related with the advances in cytology and histology and with nutrition issues Students are also introduced to the broad issues of Pharmacology, benefits and environmental risk factors upon human health, genetic diseases with the related competences in cytogenetic research and cellular biotechnologies.

During the course expert professionals will give theoretical-practical lectures on specific aspects of the subject area providing deeper knowledge of the subject field which helps students in entering the labour market. Prospective Biologists may deal with professional deontology, rules and regulations for quality and safety control of organic products.

The degree course is designed to equip students with adequate scientific research methods, enabling graduates to work in autonomy, being responsible of projects, facilities and staff

Graduates in “Health Biology” might be professionally involved in:

 - diagnostic laboratories;

 - safety and quality certification and control;

 - research in the biosanitary field, in public and private facilities;

 - research and marketing in the pharmaceutical industry;

 - research in the technological food industry;

 - forensic analysis and consulting in the biomolecular field;

 - promotion and development of scientific and technological innovation;

 - planning and management of technologies.

The coursework is structured to achieve the assurance of the following learning goals:

 1. understanding of normal and altered biological phenomena in human beings and health protection;

 2. service management skills directed to biological, microbiological, safety and quality certification laboratories, and laboratories for control of biological products in the National Healthcare System;

 3. knowledge of Nutrition Biology;

 4. knowledge of the principal alterations in metabolism;

 5. knowledge of laboratory, healthcare and environmental regulations;

 6. scientific popularization;

The course provides for the necessary cultural background for:

 - Research doctorate courses in the biosanitary, physiopathological, oncological-experimental ambits;

 - Specialisation schools in the biomedical ambit (clinical pathology, clinical biochemistry, clinical microbiology, science of alimentation)

 - Executive career in both private and public laboratories;

 - work in higher education institutions in the biosanitary, oncological, biomolecular, microbiological and hygiene fields.
