Abstract

In the years in which he was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto (1943-44), Viktor Ullmann wrote his last Piano Sonatas, the one-act Der Kaiser von Atlantis (The Emperor of Atlantis), which constitutes his testament focuses on the genesis, dramaturgy and symbols of the work, investigating its various musical suggestions: from cabaret to the music of Mahler.
