Graduated with honors in Civil Engineering in 1986 at the University of Palermo, she began her research activity at the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. PhD in Structural Engineering in 1992, at the University of Naples "Federico II". University Researcher at the University of Palermo since 1994. Associate Professor of Structural Design since 1998. Full Professor since 2004 at the current Engineering Department of the University of Palermo. 

She teaches Structural Design for students of the Civil Engineering degree course and Safety and Structural Rehabilitation of Existing Buildings - Masonry Constructions - for students of the master's degree course in Building Systems Engineering. 

She was Coordinator of the Master's Degree Course in Building Systems Engineering at the University of Palermo, from 2015 to 2022. 

She is author of numerous scientific publications mainly concerning the following research fields: linear and non-linear analysis of spatial multi-storey framed systems in seismic areas; verification of seismic vulnerability of historic and monumental masonry buildings; problems of reinforcement and/or consolidation of masonry elements with the use of innovative materials; bond problems in reinforced concrete structures; ductility of columns subjected to cyclic loads; fiber reinforced concrete; seismic behavior of mixed lattice girders; structural monitoring in masonry constructions. 

She was Coordinator of the PhD in Structural Engineering of the University of Palermo, from 2008 to 2012; since 1998 he has been a member of the Academic Board of the same Doctorate, now merged into the AIM HIGHEST International Doctorate. 

In the context of the topics covered, she is responsible for Conventions and Research Projects; she is a member of Reporting Commissions of the Superior Council of Public Works (in Italian MIT); she has been a member of the Interdepartmental Center for Research on Historical Centers (in Italian CIRCES) of the University of Palermo since 2012 and vice director from 2015 until the closure of the Center in 2021. 

She is currently a member of the National University Council at the University Ministry, starting as of February 2021 for a four-year term. 

She is coordinator of the Structures and Infrastructures Section of the Engineering Department of the University of Palermo for the three-year period 2021-2024. 

Member of the Scientific Council of the II level Master INNOVATIVE MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDING" 3rd EDITION And Coordinator Of The Same Master For The 4th EDITION. 

Member of the Board of and of the Scientific Council of the Department of Engineering from 2018 to today. 

She is Editorial Board Member of the Construction Materials MDPI Journal and reviewer of several international scientific journals including Materials and Structures, Journal of Composites for Construction ASCE, Journal of Structural Engineering ASCE, Cement and Concrete Composites, Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, Construction and Building Materials, Engineering Structures.

She is a member of various scientific associations including the College of Technicians of Building Industrialization (in Italian CTE), the Italian Association of Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete (in Italian AICAP), the Italian National Association of Earthquake Engineering (in Italian ANIDIS).
