Abstract

This volume collects the results of a call for contributions born within the VILLARD network with the aim of building a critical table around the design theme of the relationship between migration and the contemporary landscape. The proposals received were presented by the authors as part of a study seminar held at the Department of Architecture of the Federico II University of Naples on 21 April 2023. The assumption on which the experimental research A.M.A.R.E. Migration Atlas. Crossings and European roots, concerns the idea that the phenomenon of migrations can constitute an unprecedented key to understanding the Italian landscape, capable of detecting ongoing mutations, neglected relationships between settlements, uses, geographical areas and of prefiguring scenarios based on updated and verified data. The initiative represented a probe to verify the research hypothesis which sees the role of the disciplines related to architectural design as a driving force with respect to the understanding of the transformation phenomena in progress and the construction of future scenarios for Italian landscapes. In support of the call for contributions, dialogue activities with operators active in reception activities (Reflections) and guided tours in the “emerging” spaces generated by the migratory phenomenon (Explorations) were built in the various “Villard cities”. The call for contributions with the essays collected represents a probe of this Atlas. The study day welcomed the contributions that reasoned on the seminar experiences shared by the Villard network; brought to the attention of the VILLARD network unpublished case studies identified; testified to the presence of similar research conducted in different disciplinary contexts.
