Abstract

For years, Agrigento's Valley of the Temples has evoked the problem of unauthorised building, of the hundreds of houses that have sprung up within its perimeter of absolute unbuildability, excluded from any amnesty but a constant source of social and political tension. Today, however, the Valley of the Temples attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists and is the fundamental reason for the city's designation as capital of culture. What made this transformation possible? Here are a few elements to explain it.
