Abstract

This study, which takes place in Palermo and is sponsored by the Interreg Italia-Malta programme, reflects on topics that are linked to both physical and cultural accessibility for the historical city, along with the importance of designing spaces of connection. One of this project’s main goals is to elaborate architectural and technolog-ical solutions in the field of accessibility as we contemporarily mean it. This goal can be achieved by linking the stories of the inhabitants to the ones of the monuments and the urban aggregation spaces such as squares and churchyards. Building a shared background between the architectonical restoration work group and the industrial design one has been fundamental for the creation of a synergic exchange of different technical skills. We produced two accessibility maps, which have been designed synergically with the Municipality and the Superintendence and which interact with and App that has been specifically developed for the project. A synthetic and efficient exchange of information is of the essence, but in a way that doesn’t want to oversimplify the significance and the complexity of the message. In order to do so, operating a translation of graphical, typographical, pictographical and infographical systems is fundamental. The aspect of communication becomes a challenge, based on the in-formation exchange and on the creation of a common language that allows different technical figures to interact. It also becomes an essential step in the definition of a system that changes into an interface between the project and its beneficiary. The project is presented as a protocol for interventions which, by being applied to the acces-sibility map (which is georeferenced and incremental on the net), will allow to increase and update the amount of information, also combining it with augmented reality.
