In the winter of 2020, the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic prompted the Italian government to adopt "Urgent measures for the containment and management of the epidemiological emergency due to COVID-19", to control the spread of the plague. The measures included, among other things, the prohibition of meetings, i.e. static or itinerant aggregation of groups of people gathered for any reason, and of demonstrations and events, and consequently the cessation of all public religious celebrations.
