Curriculum: TECHNOLOGIES OF BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE SUBSTANCES

The Curriculum TECHNOLOGIES OF BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE SUBSTANCES concerns the improving of all those technological and pharmaceutical issues that are of primary importance for the design and preparation of modern pharmaceutical formulations.

Since some decades, the principle that the effectiveness of a conventional drug delivery system could be greatly improved by employing of new pharmaceutical technologies has been consolidated. Therefore, the aim of the course is to provide, to PhD students, a training in the field of Pharmaceutical Technology, involving all those multidisciplinary aspects that are of primary importance for the design and development of innovative dosage forms, for an accurate evaluation of the related pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic behavior and for the quality control of pharmaceutical, diagnostic, nutraceutical and cosmetic formulations. Further, an important educational objective concerns the design and the preparation of systems for regenerative medicine as scaffolds for cell growth, proliferation and differentiation, to allow the repair and/or regeneration of tissues.

Therefore, the training program of PhD students will be based on the study of new therapeutic, diagnostics, nutraceutical and cosmetic systems and the study of new scaffolds for tissue engineering .

In particular , the activity program includes :

a)      the choice by the PhD student of a research topic more suited to his scientific interests ;

b)      the research and study activity, carried out in the laboratories of the tutor which is assigned by the Academic Board;

c)      a period of training and specialization in another qualified laboratory abroad;

d)      attendance at university courses, school, seminars and lectures on the main topics of innovative pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutraceutical technology, applied pharmaceutical chemistry and regenerative medicine, whose lessons will be by teachers both Italian and foreign language;

e)      attendance at conferences and workshops on topics related to the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutraceutical technologies, and regenerative medicine ;

f)       attendance at educational activities organized by the " Summer School for Advanced Education in Pharmaceutical Technology " ;

g)      reports to the tutor on the results achieved and an annual report to the Academic Board.

In order to improve the educational path, interdisciplinary collaborations will be established to allow PhD students to follow the systems from design to production.

The themes of the Curriculum TECHNOLOGIES OF BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE SUBSTANCES mainly concern:

-    the design, preparation, physicochemical and biological characterization of innovative technological systems for the administration and the modified release of drugs, including proteins, nucleic acids based drugs, substances for diagnostic use, nutraceuticals and cosmetics.

-    the design, preparation, physicochemical and biological characterization of three-dimensional polymericscaffolds to be used in the field of regenerative medicine for the repair and/or regeneration of human tissues.
