Fair Trials Networks Coordinator Simona Di Dio visited yesterday the Università degli studi di Palermo.

Simona was invited by Professor Annalisa Mangiaracina to speak during her Criminal Procedural Law lecture. She had the opportunity to discuss with law students some of the most pressing challenges facing criminal justice systems across Europe, from the overuse of pre-trial detention, to the rise of AI in criminal proceedings, to the need for stronger procedural safeguards in cross-border cases.

Simona also shared what Fair Trials, and our Legal Expert Advisory Panel (LEAP) network, are doing right now to push for meaningful, rights-based reform, and why the voices of people with lived experience of the justice system, through our European Impacted Person Advisory Council (EIPAC), are becoming central to that work.

These students are the lawyers, judges and policymakers of tomorrow. Conversations like this one are how change begins.
