MEDJICARP Spring School

ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research).

The school will provide interdisciplinary training on coastal ocean observing systems, with a focus on HF radar, FerryBox systems, marine environmental monitoring, oceanographic data, QA/QC, and operational applications such as oil spill response, search and rescue, water quality monitoring, marine protected areas and coastal management.

Applications will be assessed based on the relevance of the applicant’s background, motivation, expected benefit, potential to apply the knowledge gained, technical experience or interest and geographical position.

A limited numbers of financial support vouchers (i.e. travel, accommodation, transfers and VISA support) will be made available by the organization committee. These are intended exclusively for students and early career research . Financial support will be awarded on a competition basis, with contributions of up to € 1500 for European Union Mediterranean Countries (EUMC) applicants and up to € 2000 for Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPC), subject to available funds. The selection will be based on the ranking of the applicants achieved during the evaluation phase.


PROVISIONAL AGENDA

Tuesday 6 April 2027 15:00 – 17:00

Day 1 - Introduction and Marine Monitoring

The first day will provide an overview of the broader scientific and operational context of the Spring School, introducing key coastal and marine challenges, monitoring needs and basic oceanographic concepts.

 Welcome and introduction to the Spring School                                       

lessons on the following topics:

-Key variables for marine monitoring

-Climate change and adaptation in coastal and marine environments, extreme events and coastal protection                                                      

-Introduction to wave dynamics

-Introduction to oceanography: marine currents                                      

During this day, a Coffee Break will be offered


Wednesday 7 April 2027 9:00 – 17:00

Day 2 - Specialist Sessions on Currents and Waves

The second day will focus on observing methods and technologies for monitoring marine currents and waves, including in situ systems, HF Radar and satellite-based approaches and data portals.

lessons on the following topics:

-measurements of marine currents (in situ, HF radar, Radar Altimeters and Geostrophic currents)

-data portals, CMS, EmodNet & the HFR European node

-operational applications

During this day, two Coffee Breaks and a Light Lunch will be offered


Thursday 8 April 2027 9:00 – 17:00

Day 3 - Integrated Monitoring, Practical Session and Site Visit

The final day will introduce the wave monitoring and complementary observing platforms. A practical work with marine monitoring data is also planned.

The programme will conclude with a site visit to an HF Radar station in the Palermo area (afternoon)

-measurements of sea waves (wave buoys, HF radar, Radar Altimeters)

-FerryBox systems and ships of opportunity
