Leonardo Valerio Noto is Full Professor of Hydrology at the University of Palermo, Italy. His main research interests include surface hydrology (distributed hydrological modeling, ecohydrology), climate change impact analysis and mitigation, and statistical analysis of hydrological variables, with particular focus on extreme events such as floods and droughts.

He was a visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA, in 2004 and 2006, for a total period of 10 months, within the research group led by Prof. R.L. Bras. In 2015, he was also a visiting scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA) for four months.

Since 2021, he has served as Coordinator of the Chemical, Environmental, Biomedical, Hydraulic and Materials Engineering Section of the Department of Engineering at the University of Palermo.

He currently serves as Associate Editor for three hydrological ISI journals, i.e. Hydrological Processes, Water Resources Management, and Water. He has authored or co-authored over 310 scientific publications presented at national and international conferences, with more than 100 papers published in ISI journals (about 4000 citations and H-index=37).

He was a board member of CINID (Interuniversity Consortium for Hydrology) and serves on the Scientific Council of both the Italian Hydrological Society (SII). He is also a member of the National Committee for Scientific Qualification (ASN) for the six-year term. In 2024 and 2025, he was included in Stanford University’s ranking of the World’s Top 2% Scientists. Head of Hydrology and Climate Change Impacts Lab (HYCLIC)

He was Chairman of the XIII World Congress of European Water Resources Association held in Palermo in 2025, and he serve as President/Chairman of European Academy of Water Resources Engineers & Scientists since July 2025).
