A doctoral scholarship in Italy is financial support that finances three years (or more, if applicable) of training and research within a doctoral program. It is regulated by Ministerial Decree 226/2021 and is the primary tool for enabling doctoral students to dedicate themselves full-time to research.

What is a doctoral scholarship?

  • It is an annual grant that a doctoral student receives to carry out research.
  • The scholarship is paid monthly and lasts three years, subject to extraordinary extensions.
  • it's about € 1.195 €/month

Scholarship Amount

Currently, it is approximately:

  • €14,340 net per year
  • € 1.195 net per month
  • The amount increases by 50% during research periods abroad
  • is not taxed as income from employment;

What the scholarship covers

  • PhD student support,
  • research activities,
  • possible mobility in Italy and abroad.
  • It does not finance university fees (which, however, are very low for PhD students and are often waived for scholarship recipients).

The scholarship entitles you to:

  • INAIL/INPS insurance (separate management),
  • 50% increase during periods abroad (up to a maximum of 12 months, extendable to 18),
  • additional research budget (minimum 10% of the scholarship amount, annual),
  • maternity
  • compatibility with certain forms of employment (only part-time and with prior authorization, if they do not interfere with research).

Who is eligible?

The scholarship is awarded through a competitive process and not based on the ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator).
Allocation is based on:

  • the candidate's score,
  • the number of scholarships available for each program.
