A doctoral scholarship in Italy is financial support that finances three years (or more, if applicable) of training and research within a doctoral program. It is regulated by Ministerial Decree 226/2021 and is the primary tool for enabling doctoral students to dedicate themselves full-time to research.
What is a doctoral scholarship?
- It is an annual grant that a doctoral student receives to carry out research.

Scholarship Amount
Currently, it is approximately:
- €14,340 net per year
- € 1.195 net per month
- The amount increases by 50% during research periods abroad
- is not taxed as income from employment;
What the scholarship covers
- PhD student support,
- research activities,
- possible mobility in Italy and abroad.
- It does not finance university fees (which, however, are very low for PhD students and are often waived for scholarship recipients).
Scholarship Rights
The scholarship entitles you to:
- INAIL/INPS insurance (separate management),
- 50% increase during periods abroad (up to a maximum of 12 months, extendable to 18),
- additional research budget (minimum 10% of the scholarship amount, annual),
- maternity
- compatibility with certain forms of employment (only part-time and with prior authorization, if they do not interfere with research).
Who is eligible?
The scholarship is awarded through a competitive process and not based on the ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator).
Allocation is based on:
- the candidate's score,
- the number of scholarships available for each program.
Who funds the scholarships
Scholarships can be funded by:
- Universities,
- MUR (Ministry of Education, University and Research),
- research institutions (CNR, INFN, etc.),
- companies (industrial PhDs),
- private foundations,
- regions or European projects.
