The Heritage Acoustics Laboratory is a cutting-edge interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to the exploration, digital reconstruction, and valorisation of the sonic heritage of antiquity. Operating at the forefront of the emerging field of Sonic Heritage, the laboratory aims to understand and restore the acoustic identity of historical sites, treating sound as a vital form of intangible cultural heritage.

Through a synthesis of advanced archaeological methodologies and state-of-the-art digital technologies, the Laboratory investigates the profound relationship between sound, space, and human performance. Our research framework integrates archaeoacoustics, 3D acoustic modelling, psychoacoustics, and ecoacoustics to explore the complexities of ancient aural architectures. By employing auralisation and immersive environments (VR, AR, MR), the laboratory provides innovative tools for the reconstruction of historical sensory experiences and the engagement with cultural heritage.

The Laboratory serves as the primary research site for the international project VOICING (Voicing Spaces: Towards an Aural Architecture in the Past), an Advanced Grant (FIS-02749) funded by the Italian Science Fund (FIS) and the Ministry of University and Research (MUR). The multidisciplinary research team brings together expertise in Sonic Archaeology, Architectural Acoustics, Archaeozoology, GIS, Applied Acoustics, and Acoustic Engineering, alongside specialists in Ancient Landscapes and Immersive Technologies.
