Doctoral Board

26-set-2025

Ascolta

The Doctoral Board is the academic body that governs and coordinates a doctoral program.

What is it?

It is the group of professors and researchers who:

  • plan the doctoral program,
  • define the program offerings,
  • supervise scientific and teaching activities,
  • evaluate the progress of doctoral students,
  • approve or change supervisors,
  • authorize periods abroad, seminars, and exams,
  • approve admission to the final exam and thesis defense.
  • The doctoral college is established by Ministerial Decree 226/2021.

Who is part of it?

  • full and associate professors,
  • tenured and fixed-term researchers,
  • possibly external experts (in some cases).
  • The PhD Committee elects a PhD coordinator, who directs the program.

Why it's important

The PhD Committee is important for a PhD student because:

  • it assigns a tutor/supervisor,
  • annually evaluates progress and decides on progression to subsequent years,
  • approves the thesis project,
  • decides whether to admit a student to the final defense.
  • It is, in effect, the body "responsible" for the proper conduct of the PhD.
