Tra Limes e Limen

Abstract

Between “limes” and “limen” Analyzing the gathered projects, there is a common result, characterized by the Latin words “limes” and “limen”. The two words explain the way the projects, giving shape to the interection between town and countryside, establish a condition of limit or threshold. 01. The agricultural Gugliotta park at piano Tavola, Carini At Carini, for the first area of the project there are two different attitudes. The groups Cacciatore, Farina, Prandi and Moduloquattro analyze via Rocco Chinnici as main element of their intervention, while the groups Elmo and Trisciuglio designed installations where this axis is diluted or denied. 02. The margin of the agricultural park of stream San Vincenzo, that overlooks corso Italia at Carini The future park is an extraordinary potentiality of the area of the project where there is the entrance. The group Ferro modifies the perimeter of the intervention including the area of the station. The group Fiamingo revises the curtain on corso Italia constituing existing buildings and new architectures. The groups Gresleri, Saitta and Guaragna draw their attention to the countryside near corso Italia, identifying a quadrangular perimeter of the area that changes, in the project by Marino, into a built in square. 03. Transversal crossing torre dell'orsa-airport-main road The area of the project, near Falcone and Borsellino airport, leads the designers to analyze the relationship between the infrastructures and the territory. The motorway, the main road, the railway and the underground cut the sprawl developed on a previously agricultural territory. The projects (Catarsi, Costanzo, Culotta, Falzetti, Sciascia), playing on the remaining countryside, establish connections between the inner parts of the area and the external margins and the new Gesap area. 04. Infrastructures, countryside and urban tissues at Partinico. Between the road ss113 and viale dei Platani The planned areas, as a substitute of the industrial installation, propose different types of interaction between built and the countryside, considering the design of the new ring road and the relationship with the station. In the projects (Cannizzo-Davì-Gentile- Macaluso, Ferrari-Monestiroli-Tinazzi, Strappa, Trentin, Viola) central spaces come out and they mediate the close town, Partinico, with the agricultural expanses, open spaces in a stretched installation that often follows the settlement features of Partinico. 05. Continuity between urban tissues and agricultural spaces at northern Partinico It is a field, not much definite by the urban feature, surrounded by the countryside. None of the two parts can supply sure settlements. Their conditions drives the designers (Daidone, Giani, Menagatti-Nencini, Palma-Ravagnati, Stendardo) to consider the territorial scale or the smallest paths inside the countryside. The proposals respect the hypothesis of the research, based on “Town in extension” by Samonà. So a rewriting of the project interventions allows, finally, to recompose the fragments of broken up soils. The appropriation of the soil, as a place of living in the town in extension, seems to be obtained by a part of the project (agricultural, urban and landscape project). Living has had the possibility to define through the design of a limit or it has extended the threshold immoderately. We imagined a new unitary and in extension town for the five places, where the boundaries correspond to the geographical ones and the urban feature of the smaller centres and small buildings are evident thanks to the complementary action of the design of the countryside.
