Abstract

Monteverdi expresses his idea about the musical imitation of nature in a letter of 1616, and applies it in several compositions. In particular it is interesting to analyze the madrigal A un giro sol, from the fourth book. Here Monteverdi sets to music two opposed affects: the beauty and brilliance of nature, and the suffering of the poet in love. The first is expressed through pure diatonic music, the second through chromaticism and dissonances. Monteverdi’s approach shows also similarities with the landscape painting of his time, as it is evident by a comparison with the writings of Giovanni Battista Agucchi.
