PROGRAMMA

UVA Nursing Conference 9 March 2026

 Relazione conclusiva

On March 9, the University of Palermo's School of Medicine and Surgery hosted the third international conference in partnership with the University of Vermont (USA) as part of the project "Nursing Care - Aging Well," entitled: "An Approach to Longevity: The Mediterranean Style." This year's central theme was older adults, particularly a careful assessment of their unmet needs; healthy aging as an effective approach to longevity; and, finally, the impact of genetics and lifestyle on the prevention of cerebrovascular events, typical of old age.
The conference, organized by Professor Anna Licata, Vice Coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Nursing at the School of Medicine, which has already since two-year a scientific collaboration agreement with the University of Vermont's School of Nursing and Health Sciences, was attended by internists, Professor Bruno Tuttolomondo, Dr. Mario Daidone, and Professor Antonella Giammanco, geriatricians Professor Mario Barbagallo and Dr. Francesco S. Ragusa.
Professors Janelle Sarnevitz and Abigail Nevious, who came to Palermo with a group of 12 Vermont students (seven nursing students, two social science students, two psychology and communication science students, and one public health student), discussed the main needs of Vermont's elderly population as compared with our, and more importantly, training methodologies for nursing students approaching the management of elderly patients.
The conference, held in the Ascoli Hall, was opened by the President of the School of Medicine, Professor Marcello Ciaccio.
The undisputed success of the conference, which were attended by a large and attentive audience, including students from the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and the Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics, will be crucial for launching an educational and scientific collaboration that will enable faculty and student exchanges with the University of Vermont. This agreement, following those already signed with China and USA, is the third prestigious international collaboration agreement that the School of Medicine and the Promise Department, headed by Professor
Antonio Carroccio, have signed within the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, the only bachelor's degree program taught entirely in English at the University of Palermo, actually coordinated by Professor Stefania Grimaudo.
