Research activity of the Department of Oncological and Stomatological Surgical Disciplines for 2013

The research activities of the Department of Oncological and Stomatological Surgical Disciplines for 2013 were of considerable scientific interest both nationally and internationally.

The European Economic Community has provided funding for two PON Research and Competitiveness Projects 2007-2013 / FESR European General Development Fund:

  • PON01_01078 from the title "Identification of biomarkers and development of diagnostic and therapeutic methods in the field of oncology and vascular biology";
  • PON02_00643_3613586 entitled "Development of targeted therapeutic technologies and reduced side effects".

As part of the Research activity concerning these Projects, the Tumor Stem Cells (CSTs) of colorectal carcinoma responsible for the migration and induction of the metastatic process were studied.

Another part of these studies, more focused on the identification of a targeted therapy for CSTs using proteomics techniques, has also been the subject of other funding such as those of the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC) 5xmille.

The main research activities of the Department can be differentiated on the basis of the issues addressed by the various scientific disciplinary sectors, which - in broad terms - intercept exactly the name of the department, ie the surgeries, oncology and stomatological sciences.

The Department has 3 research laboratories:

  1. Genetics and Clinical Molecular Oncology and Target Therapy (Resp. Prof. A. Russo)
  2. Cellular and Molecular Physiopathology (resp. Prof. G. Stassi)
  3. BIOPLAST- Laboratory of BIOlogy and regenerative medicine - PLASTic surgery (Resp. prof.ssa Adriana Cordova)

The Department registered, in the PRIN 2015 session, the funding of n. 1 PRIN (with 2 Scientific Units in the Department of the SSD MED / 18) the presentation of 1 PRIN (with professor of the National coordinator Department; not funded, score 13/15; SSD MED / 50), n.4 PRIN not funded (with teacher of the Department in charge of Units) and several participations of teachers in other propositions of PRIN, a proposition of Horizon 2020 (MED / 50) and a COST EU project (BIO / 13).

As can be easily inferred from the SUA-RD Form and from the Review Sheets, the Department is demonstrating resilience, compared to the benchmark of the respective SSDs and Departments with similar typology.

In the following, the research groups of the SSDs (in numerical order) relating to the department are presented in detail.

Physiology studies the vital functions of animals and humans, even in a comparative way. It analyzes how the living organism obtains and maintains the homeostasis of its internal medium at the molecular, cellular and tissue level, in the context of the modifications of the surrounding environment. He studies biophysics, the electrophysiological and functional mechanisms of transport and communication systems in biological membranes, cell motility, as well as the specialized functions of individual cells. From the unity of functional solutions devised by evolution, it formulates the enunciation of physiological laws of a general nature. Verify the validity of these laws in models of maximum complexity by studying, in Man and in other primates, mechanisms and interrelations of all vegetative functions and the general foundations of endocrinology. It evaluates the nutritional characteristics of food, the state of nutrition, energy expenditure and need, the physiological use of nutrients in the diet. He studies the neurobiological and psychophysiological foundations concerning behavior and cognitive and emotional interactions between the subject and the environment. It also analyzes the integrated functioning of the various organs and apparatuses during motor activities and in extreme environmental conditions. Finally, it studies the potential applications of this knowledge in the environmental, biotechnological and sports fields.

The sector is interested in the scientific and didactic-formative activity in the field of integrated study of the cell and living organisms, with particular regard to the basic mechanisms involved in the following processes: expression, duplication and transmission of genetic information, development, differentiation, cell proliferation, biogenesis of organelles and cellular structures and interaction between cells. The sector also studies the cellular bases of motor activity, behavior and evolution. The biotechnological and general and molecular genetic applications of knowledge in the above processes constitute a relevant aspect to the sector. The learning and use of all advanced biological technologies, including recombinant technologies and the use of transgenic animals, is essential for achieving the stated objectives.

The sector describes the conformation and structure of the human body in its macroscopic and microscopic aspects in the various periods of life. It also analyzes the organogenesis and the various stages of development by identifying the individual diversities, the congenital variants of the different organs or apparatuses and searching for the primary causes of morphogenetic events. It uses methods of systematic investigation and experimental, topographical or instrumental application branches for the acquisition of images at different macro and microscopic resolution levels, for the research of functional activities or for specific developments in biomedical and motor sciences. Finally he studies the applications of clinical anatomical knowledge and radiological anatomy.

The sector is interested in the scientific and educational-training activity, as well as in the care activity consistent with them in the field of medical oncology; the sector has specific expertise in clinical, cellular and molecular cancer research and in its applications to clinical diagnostics and to the therapy of neoplastic pathology.

The SSD MED/06 (Medical Oncology), composed of 5 units of teaching staff (1 P.O. and 4. RC a t.i.), has developed the following research lines:

  • Inhibition of the PAM signaling pathway in the treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma;
  • Role of the possible association between long non-coding RNA and molecular target therapies in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST);
  • Effect of short-term fasting on response to conventional therapy in human tumors: understanding of the molecular mechanisms and involvement of miRNAs;
  • Association of circulating DNA mutations (ctDNA) and variation of circulating miRNAs, using liquid biopsies, in patients with non-small cell lung cancer;
  • Role of ct-DNA as a predictive biomarker of efficacy of immunotherapy in advanced NSCLC;
  • Effects of terapiemultitarget on overcoming the mechanisms of acquired resistance to anti-EGFR and anti-VEGF therapies in colorectal cancer;
  • The role of Next Generation Sequencing and liquid biopsy in identifying the molecular profile of patients with ovarian cancer;
  • Mutational analysis of the kinase domain of the BCR-ABL fusion gene by direct automatic sequencing in patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML);
  • Innovative projects in Psycho-oncology and Cardio-oncology.


They were performed in collaboration n. 17 Clinical Studies 2014-2016.
The research activities carried out between 2014 and 2016 led to 57 publications, 44 of which on first quartile journals (Q1). The SSD has financed - through the Department - n. 2 Research grants and coordinated n. 2 university masters.

The sector is interested in the scientific and educational-training activity, as well as in the care activity consistent with it in the field of physiopathology, functional and instrumental semeiotics and general surgical clinic; the sector also has specific expertise in emergency surgery and first aid, in traditional, endoscopic and minimally invasive digestive tract surgery, in endocrine surgery, in oncological surgery and in replacement, reconstructive and organ transplant surgery.

The SSD MED / 18 (General Surgery), with 28 teachers (from  http://cercauniversita.cineca.it/php5/docenti/vis_docenti.php), is composed of different research groups and respective lines:

  • Application of innovative and minimally invasive technologies and materials for the treatment of major vascular, biliary and urological diseases, and relative participation in the PRIN 2015 Project Funded on the subject, with 2 research units of the Department of PRIN, and n. 21 research products (between 2014 and 2016);
  • Studies on thyroid pathology, laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, breast cancer, on Obesity [stem cells derived from adipose tissue (conducted in collaboration with DIBIMED entitled "NANOG plays a hierarchical role in the transcription network regulating the pluripotency and plasticity of adipose tissue -derived stem cells (ASCs) "], and 19 publications (between 2014 and 2016).

The sector is interested in the scientific and educational-training activity, as well as in the care activity consistent with it in the field of plastic-reconstructive surgery; the sector has expertise in the physiopathology and clinical practice in plastic surgery and in the application of advanced surgical methods, microsurgical and minimally invasive in the reconstructive field.

The SSD MED / 19 (Plastic Surgery) is represented by five units of teaching staff (of which 1 RC currently on leave, in service at the University of Gent, Belgium).
Different and productive lines of characterizing and innovative research:

  • Surgical anatomy: su cadavere, which used the collaboration with the University of Innsbruck, Austria, led to the identification of the Vasto Laterale muscle partitions, and produced 7 publications;
  • Perforating and propeller flaps: processing of surgical technique variants that produced 7 publications;
  • Lymphedema: an integral part of a doctoral thesis in Oncology and Experimental Surgery, which produced 2 publications;
  • Regenerative surgery: mesenchymal stem cells, lipofilling and PRP [originated from "Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs) in Suspension: Phenotyping, Differentiation and Engineering for Cranial Vault Reconstruction" (2010 financed research project. Project Code: GR-2010- 2321017)] with 3 ongoing clinical studies and, in progress, 1 publication;
  • Nerve regeneration: Research projects of No. 2 PhDst of the PhD in Oncology and Experimental Surgery were focused on this line of research; the research line also made use of the collaboration with the University of Turin and the University of Zurich, Switzerland; this line of research has produced 6 publications;
  • Cutaneous and oral cavity tumors: on this line of research the research project of No. 1 PhD was focused (evaluation and treatment of oral disability after surgical treatment, with the development of a new indicator, "FLiGS": Functional Lips Glasgow scale Score, dedicated to lip tumors);
  • other arms are: the study of the immune system in cutaneous tumors, and in particular the role of gamma delta T lymphocytes and NK lymphocytes, infiltrating and circulating, in cutaneous melanoma and in cutaneous and oral cavity spinaliomas.

In summary, the research activities carried out between 2014 and 2016 led to the publication, for the SSD / MED19 sector, of 26 publications, 9 of which in journals of the first quartile (Q1).

The sector is interested in the scientific and educational-training activity, as well as in the care activity consistent with it in the field of traditional and endovascular vascular surgery; the sector has specific expertise in the study of pathophysiology, methodology, functional and instrumental semeiotics and therapy in vascular apparatus surgery.

The SSD MED/22 (Vascular Surgery) is among the most modern branches of surgery, characterized by a high interdisciplinary nature, is composed of 2 units (1 PO and 1 RTDA), has carried out research on the application of technologies and materials innovative and minimally invasive for the treatment of major vascular diseases in an interdisciplinary context with an inclination towards internationalization.
In particular, the research lines concerned the EVAR method in urgency, the EVAR method for the treatment of complex aortic pathology, the EVAR method outside the instructions for use.
In addition, the application of intravascular ultrasonography for the purpose of reducing ionizing radiation and the use of contrast media. Participation in the international register PERICLE.
Internationalization is a strength of the SSD, in the period 2014-2016 the MED/22 realized/collaborated 28 research products with publications on "top journals" of surgery and vascular surgery.

The sector is interested in the scientific and educational-training activity, as well as in the care activity consistent with it in the field of pathophysiology and clinical diseases of the odontostomatological apparatus in pediatric and adult age and of preventive and community dentistry; the sector has specific expertise in the fields of oral surgery, restorative dentistry, orthodontics, clinical gnathology, pedodontics, periodontology and implantology and in the study of dental prostheses and implant-prosthetic and odontostomatological rehabilitation and dental materials.

The SSD MED/28 (Odontostomatologic Diseases) is currently composed of n. 14 professors (1 PO is passed from the SSD MED / 50 to MED / 28 in 2016). The lines of research in progress are summarized as follows:

  1. Pathology and Oral Medicine in patients at risk (oncology, fragile, elderly)
    This line of research, which is predominantly clinical and translational, has developed on the following topics:
    • Osteonecrosis of Masculine Bones (ONJ) from Drugs
    • Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacogenetics of ONJs (project supported by AIFA)
    • Oncology of the oral cavity
    • Non-plaque-related gingivitis
    • Staminality from dental pulp and gingiva (ex-vivo, in vitro and animal studies) - PhD thesis XXIX cycle
    • Telemedicine and odontostomatological teleconsultation for frail patients (PSN 2013 financing)
    • Optical coherence tomography for oral mucosa (with acquisition of new equipment in 2016) - PhD thesis XXX cycle;
  2. Prosthetic dentistry
    This line of research, mainly of a translation type, has developed since 2015 on issues of dental materials, dental prostheses and implant-prosthetic technologies, also in collaboration with PROSAMI with regard to microbiological assessments;
  3. Preventive and community dentistry
    This line of research has provided in 2016 the start of an epidemiological survey on the prevalence of caries in Palermo children and adolescents (in collaboration with the WHO Center for Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology of the University of Milan).
    Within this line of research, moreover, the research conducted on the antibacterial activity of oral antiseptics, some in collaboration with PROSAMI, is framed;
  4. Clinical applications of capillaroscopy
    This line of research developed from the application of capillaroscopic investigation for the evaluation of oral microcirculation in patients suffering from local pathologies (potentially malignant lesions) and systemic pathologies (diabetes), in smokers, in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, endodontic treatment and topical medical therapy for oral lesions.

The members of the SSD participated in the PRIN 2015 tender as Heads of Research Units in n. 4 projects (with excellent scores, but not financed), finally the group includes, in the years to which it refers, 27 indexed publications.

In addition to the SSDs, historically present in the Department, there is the new SSD of laboratory and medical sciences and techniques (MED / 46 and 50), with well-structured lines of research.

The sector is interested in the scientific and educational-training activity, as well as in the care activity consistent with it in the field of technical sciences of the diagnostic health professions and of scientific and educational-training activities, in the field of biomedical technologies, biotechnologies and technical sciences medical applications with particular regard to the translational research related to them and its application; the research activities related to the professional figures of the respective health professions are specific areas of competence.

The SSD MED / 46 (Technical Sciences of medicine and laboratory) (with No. 1 PO) presents multiple and well-structured research activities such as, in summary, on Tumor genomics for diagnostics and personalized therapy in oncology and New approach therapeutic for tissue regeneration represented by the combined use of mesenchymal stem cells and synthetic scaffolds. From 2013 to today, the research activities carried out have produced n. 40 publications.
