Abstract

Anticipating Freud - who not surprisingly was an assiduous reader - in his text Metaphysics of Sexual Love (1844) Schopenhauer tells us that behind the charm of love, its enchantment, its sweet words, its poetry and its feeling, an unspeakable sexual drive acts. In short, "Love" would only be a suggestive name, with which human beings sublimate a purely biological practice, namely the mating-reproduction cycle: while individuals, loving each other, believe they are playing their game, they are in reality the laughing stock of the species, which “uses” them to propagate itself. The essay critically addresses Schopenhauer's point of view, trying to overcome it using his main arguments
