LUCIANO SESTA

Una certa dualità. Il problema mente-corpo e il paradosso della thinking matter

Abstract

Starting from the hypothesis of a continuity between the separability of the intellect mentioned in De Anima and the Cartesian mens, in this entry we propose a version of what in contemporary debate on the mind-body problem is considered a third way between cerebral monism and the dualism of substances, that is the theory of the double aspect. Beyond the usual reference to qualia, the irreducibility of the mental to the physical could be argued through a reference to the transcendental dimension of consciousness. The result is an update dualistic perspective, in which the mind, while depending for some aspects on the nervous system, does not have an exclusively biological nature, rather configuring itself as a space where the concept of a matter that is just physical makes sense.
