The contribution of Virtual Archaeology to the Marmora Phrygiae project

Abstract

In recent years Virtual Archaeology research activities were conducted in order to understand the urban and architectural transformations of Hierapolis. Five main lines of study were developed: (i) digital survey of the monuments, (ii) reconstructive study, (iii) digital analysis of data, (iv) 3D representation of the urban landscape and its evolution, (v) implementation of an online and offline platform. This paper discusses the main contributions these different activities made to the Marmora Phrygiae Project as regards both the study of the monuments and the reconstruction of the urban image of the city. KEYWORDS: Virtual Archaeology, digital survey and restoration, quantitative analysis, 3D reconstruction, Hierapolis.
