The Symposium, held at Jesus College, University of Cambridge, is organized by some of the world’s foremost academic and research institutions, in collaboration with government agencies, the judiciary, professional bodies, compliance organizations, and the business sector. It offers a unique platform for practical discussion, knowledge exchange, and the development of strategies to prevent and combat economic crime.

What sets the Cambridge Symposium apart is its non-profit, purpose-driven approach, aiming to foster genuine international cooperation in tackling fraud, corruption, and other forms of economic misconduct. Over decades, it has served as a global forum for legal, financial, policy, and academic experts, combining keynote lectures, workshops, and networking opportunities to translate knowledge into action.

The 42nd edition, focused on cross-border crime, convened specialists from all continents to share insights, strengthen partnerships, and develop strategies to address complex, international economic threats. Held in the inspiring academic environment of Cambridge, the event offered a full week of dialogue, collaboration, and tangible progress in advancing the global fight against economic crime.

This edition underscored the Symposium’s continued role as a milestone in fostering international collaboration, innovation, and practical solutions to safeguard prosperity and stability worldwide.

Palermo International Workshop: Ethics & Responsibility of AI in Medicine – June 6–7, 2024

IMG_8936The University of Palermo hosted the Palermo International Workshop on Ethics and Responsibility of AI in Medicine on 6–7 June 2024, bringing together leading scholars and practitioners to explore the ethical, social, and medical challenges arising at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and healthcare.

The two-day event featured a series of engaging talks, panel discussions, and presentations by international experts, including:
• Pii Telakivi – Helsinki University, Finland
• Steven S. Gouveia – University of Porto, Portugal & Visiting Fellow, University of Palermo
• Simona Tiribelli – University of Macerata, Italy
• Tomi Kokkonen – Helsinki University, Finland
• Silvia Dadà – University of Pisa, Italy
• Lucia Migliorelli – Università Politecnica delle Marche, Italy

The workshop explored a wide range of critical topics, such as:
• The conceptual limits of AI in patient care
• Detection of depression using pre-trained embeddings in complex medical conditions
• Vulnerability and dependence in an era dominated by AI agents
• Environmental and ethical considerations in neonatal monitoring (Green AI vs. Red AI)
• Emotions, empathy, and trust in medical AI
• Legal, ethical, and societal implications of AI in clinical practice

The sessions fostered interdisciplinary dialogue, combining perspectives from engineering, computer science, medicine, and ethics, with a focus on practical applications and responsible innovation in healthcare technologies.

Special recognition was given to the Department of Engineering at the University of Palermo and the A.S.CENT. - Centre of Advanced Studies, whose support and organization were crucial to the success of this international workshop.

This event marked an important milestone in advancing global conversations on ethical AI in medicine, highlighting the need to balance technological innovation with human values, empathy, and professional responsibility.

Strengthening Academic Ties Between Burkina Faso and the University of Palermo

IMG_8917The Rector of the University of Palermo, Prof. Massimo Midiri, recently welcomed H.E. Cyrille Ganou Badolo, Ambassador of Burkina Faso, at the historic Steri Monumental Complex. The meeting was attended by Prof. Fabio Mazzola, Vice-Rector for Education and Internationalization, Prof. Antonello Miranda, Director of A.S.CENT. - Centre of Advanced Studies, and Antonio Tito, Honorary Consul of Burkina Faso in Palermo.

During the visit, the Rector and the Ambassador signed a Declaration of Intent aimed at fostering cultural, scientific, and academic cooperation between the University of Palermo and higher education institutions in Burkina Faso, particularly the University of Ouagadougou. The agreement sets the stage for the development of memoranda of understanding and framework agreements, facilitating faculty and student exchanges and strengthening collaboration between the two academic communities.

Ambassador Ganou Badolo emphasized the strong support of the Burkina Faso Government for initiatives promoting international academic partnerships with UniPa. Prof. Mazzola highlighted the growing presence of African students at the University of Palermo, including students from Burkina Faso, while Prof. Miranda noted that A.S.CENT. - Centre of Advanced Studies can offer scholarships to support scholars from Burkina Faso, promoting international research and academic dialogue.

This visit represents a meaningful step forward in enhancing global education, cross-cultural exchange, and collaborative research between Europe and West Africa.
