Francisco Rodrigues Rocha – Assistant Professor of Law, University of Lisbon, Portugal

Francisco Rodrigues Rocha is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, where he completed his academic training, earning a Law degree, an LL.M., and a Ph.D. Since 2012, he has been actively involved in university teaching across a broad range of legal disciplines, combining legal sciences with legal history. His teaching and research interests focus in particular on Roman Law, Portuguese Legal History, Maritime Law, Insurance Law, and Commercial Law.
In addition to his role at the University of Lisbon, Professor Rodrigues Rocha holds several visiting and invited teaching positions at leading academic institutions, including the Universidade Lusíada of Lisbon, the Universidade Lusíada of Luanda and Lobito, and the Institute of Canon Law at the Catholic University of Lisbon. He has also served as an Invited Professor at the University of Trento, reinforcing his strong international academic profile.
His academic excellence has been recognized through multiple awards and scholarships, such as the Portuguese Insurance Supervisory Authority Prize, merit-based scholarships from the University of Lisbon, and a DAAD Fellowship, which enabled him to conduct research at Heidelberg University. In 2021, he completed his Ph.D. in Roman Law, marking a significant milestone in his scholarly career.
Professor Rodrigues Rocha has coordinated and contributed to several major research projects, particularly in the field of insurance law history and the study of classical and medieval legal sources. Among his most notable initiatives are projects on the history of insurance in Portugal, the analysis of Petrus Santerna’s Tractatus de assecurationibus, and an ongoing long-term research programme dedicated to Portuguese jurists of the fifteenth century within the ius commune tradition.
Alongside his academic work, he plays an active role in legal institutions and professional associations. He is a member of the Board of Directors of AIDA – Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances (Portuguese Section) and Vice-President of the Association for the Study of Consumer Law. He is also a practicing lawyer, registered with the Portuguese Bar Association, and a partner in a law firm.
Through his integrated approach to teaching, historical research, institutional engagement, and legal practice, Francisco Rodrigues Rocha contributes meaningfully to contemporary legal scholarship, bridging the foundations of legal tradition with present-day legal challenges.
