University of Palermo International Students engage in Marine Science and Biodiversity Conservation activities in Palermo

Ascolta

The University of Palermo welcomed two international students to its Master courses, funded by the MARE project. In this framework, the two students from Tafila Technical University (Jordan) and from the University of Carthage (Tunisia) participated, in January 2026, in two significant scientific and academic events in Palermo.

Exploring Marine Habitats with ROV Technology

The first activity was a fieldwork session in Sant'Erasmo, Palermo, conducted in collaboration with the University of Palermo. The students used ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) technology to explore marine habitats, observing benthic ecosystems in situ, identifying marine species without environmental disturbance, and collecting visual data to support biodiversity assessment and habitat monitoring.

"This field activity allowed us to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge marine research tools," the students shared. "We are very grateful to Professor Francesco Paolo Mancuso for his guidance and expertise throughout the session.

Opening of the Biodiversity Gateway

The second event was the official opening of the Biodiversity Gateway in Palermo, an innovative space designed to bridge scientific research and society. As part of the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC), the Gateway aims to make biodiversity research and technologies accessible to citizens, researchers, institutions, and public administrations. "Being part of an initiative like this was truly inspiring," the students noted.

"Taking part in these two events further reinforced our motivation and commitment to environmental protection, marine science, and biodiversity conservation."
