The Mediterranean Alliance for Research and Education (MARE) is a project funded by NextGenerationEU under the Transnational Initiatives in Education (TNE).

MARE promotes collaboration between Italian universities and institutions in non-EU Mediterranean countries. It focuses on academic mobility and internationalisation to create a shared space for knowledge, innovation, and cultural exchange across the Mediterranean.

Internationalisation is a key part of university development strategies and extends existing cooperation efforts. MARE promotes the mobility of students, faculty, researchers, and administrative staff to and from countries including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia. These exchanges strengthen academic ties, support professional development, and enhance the educational experience. Mobility helps participants gain new skills, build lasting institutional partnerships, and deepen mutual understanding. It also contributes to personal and professional growth while enriching host academic communities.

MARE builds on partnerships established in the last decade through various initiatives, mainly the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility programme. It strengthens and expands these connections through targeted activities such as consolidating existing double degree programmes and developing new joint degrees between Italian and Mediterranean universities. The project also supports advanced training on key regional and global issues, encouraging interdisciplinary education in fields such as sustainable development, health, migration, and digital innovation.

These efforts improve the international appeal of participating universities and raise the quality of teaching and research. They also help institutions explore emerging academic fields and respond to the needs of an increasingly global education system.

Through MARE, universities extend their global presence while preparing a new generation of students and professionals with the skills, knowledge, and perspective to tackle major contemporary challenges. By fostering academic partnerships, MARE helps build a more connected, inclusive, and innovative Mediterranean region.
