FRANCESCA PAOLA VUTURO

Sinassario delle nobildonne. Edizione critica, traduzione e note

Abstract

The first Greek vernacular literary production includes a satirical work that, through well-known examples from biblical, historical, and literary traditions, delivers a fierce invective against womankind. The Synaxarium of Noblewomen, consisting of satirical verses—480 couplets in pairs—is located on the island of Crete under Venetian rule, dating, at least in the form we have, to the end of the 15th century. Like all medieval Greek works from regions more closely connected with Western cultural influences, the Synaxarion is an original blend of genres, literary forms, and character features, ranging from late medieval and Renaissance elements within Byzantine tradition to Western (especially Italian) influences, allowing us to approach it within a broader literary context.
