Abstract
“Boys will be boys” or do they become males? Although socio-criminological disciplines have over time neglected the relationship between violence and masculinity or treated it in essentialist and bio-reductionist terms, more recent constructionist perspectives have been able to look at masculinity (or, rather, masculinities) as socially constructed and negotiated situated products. We will ask, in order to avoid any determinist drift, whether violence and in particular sexual violence can be understood as ways of doing masculinity. Departing from case studies drawn from recent events, we will not look at male sex offenders as abnormalities or social defects, but rather as normal expressions of a way of understanding masculinity that is implicitly considered legitimate.
