Inclusive Communication Processes for the Prevention of Radicalisation

Abstract

This paper deals with the prevention of radicalisation in an era that is undergoing a profound change in the construction of social reality which, as Couldry and Hepp (2017) state, is now significantly mediatised thanks to digital media and their algorithmic infrastructure based on artificial intelligence (Hepp, 2020). Such epochal change requires an understanding of the ways in which mediatisation has acted and continues to act, and how participatory social communication strategies can propose alternative narratives that allow for changes in ideas, attitudes and perhaps behaviour (Volterrani, 2022). Our considerations start from the results of the European project OLTRE (funded by the EU Directorate for General Migration and Home Affairs – I.S.F. POLICE – CSEP programme) that has implemented counter-narrative campaigns and alternative narratives respectively in the areas of countering Islamic radicalisation and Islamophobia.
