Abstract
Polarization is a fundamental property of transverse waves, yet it is seldom explored in the context of mechanical waves on strings. When a string is plucked, the initial conditions typically excite two orthogonal transverse modes, producing linear or elliptical polarization of the resulting wave. This article presents a simple homemade device that amplifies the transverse motion of a plucked string and allows students to visualize the polarization of mechanical waves on strings. The device is inexpensive, easy to build, and suitable for classroom demonstrations.
