Abstract
Fear can be a mobilizing passion or a paralyzing and even divisive one, depending on the context in which it manifests itself: as observed, for example, in the rhetoric of Pericles or in the behavior of the Athenians during the plague. Fear can lead us to be cautious and seek appropriate solutions whenever we face uncertain or threatening situations, especially in a democratic context. As M. Nussbaum recently reminded us, "democracy is an uncertain and fear-filled realm."
