Integrated Strategies for Heritage Enhancement and UNESCO Nomination in Africa: Archaeological and Intangible Values in the Comparative Cases of Zaghouan (Tunisia) and Agrigento (Italy)

Abstract

This paper addresses the enhancement of cultural heritage in African contexts characterised by a strong integration between environment, archaeology and social practices. Through a comparison between the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento (Italy) and Zaghouan (Tunisia), it analyses different conditions in heritage-making processes. The study highlights the role of integrated design and governance in developing sustainable management models, referring to the contribution of the DO.RE.MI.HE. project in defining strategies for the UNESCO nomination of the Tunisian site.
