Promotional strategies for active lifestyle in public employees
Abstract
Introduction
Desk workers spend nearly half of their waking time at work, between 8 and 11 hours a day. The resulting sedentary behavior and physical inactivity, predisposes them to the development of many physical and mental disorders, increasing the risk of developing diseases. In scientific literature, the benefits of exercise on musculoskeletal disorders, work stress levels and general welfare are now known, although the effect of physical activity are not completely clear. The aim of this study is to assess the optimal dose-response relationship and which protocols typologies can promote the reduction of work induced stress in public administration employees (PA).
Methods
In a randomized controlled trial (RTC) will be recruited some public administration employees, who perform sedentary work activities. Participants will be divided into 3 intervention groups and a control group. The intervention group “during work” will follow a physical activity protocol for 30 minutes/day for 24 weeks, during working hours. The intervention group “out of work” will perform a physical activity protocol for the development of endurance, strength, balance and joint mobility for 2 days/week for 24 weeks, after working hours. Whereas a “mixed group” will participate in both interventions. The sample will be assessed on body composition through a bioelectrical impedance analysis and on the quality of life through the IPAQ and SF36 questionnaires. Cardiorespiratory capacity test (Bruce protocol treadmill test), general strength test (hand grip test), postural balance (Romberg Test), joint mobility (inertial measurement tool), presence of musculoskeletal disorders (Numerical Pain Rating Scale) and stress level analysis (HRV analysis) will be administered.
Expected results
This study will attempt to define the optimal dose-response relationship of physical exercise in order to obtain benefits on public administration employees with the aim of reducing work-related stress levels and getting more participation in these programs, inducing long-term changes in sedentary behaviors.
