Progetto MARE

Voices of the MARE Project: Final Reflections on mobility and growth across the Mediterranean

Ascolta

As the MARE project nears its end, the most telling measure of what it achieved comes from the people who took part in it. Throughout the project, international mobility has been the main mechanism for academic exchange: connecting Italian universities with partner institutions across the region, enabling joint research, and giving students and staff direct experience on the other side of the sea.

By enabling the exchange of students, faculty, and administrative staff, MARE has turned Mediterranean cooperation into a living, breathing reality. Below, participants from both sides of the sea share their firsthand experiences, illustrating how this mobility program is reshaping academic paths and overcoming cultural barriers.

Faculty & Staff: Driving Innovation and Regional Cooperation

From Italy to Partner countries

  • Italian Professor (Mobility at a Partner University in Morocco):

"The main strengths lie in the close cooperation with the host university, which guaranteed a constant exchange of skills, resources, and methodological tools. The integration of different disciplinary skills and the openness to continuous discussion allowed us to successfully tackle project challenges."

  • Italian Professor, University of Palermo (Mobility in Morocco for conference networking):

"It is conceived as a space for mutual exchange, offering a highly engaging and valuable opportunity to share best practices in sustainable tourism and to explore how to integrate this theme into academic curricula across different institutional contexts."

  • Italian Professor (Mobility at Manouba University, Tunis, Tunisia):

"There was great availability and interest in strengthening the scientific cooperation and training network on the part of local colleagues at Manouba in Tunis [...] In any case, the mobility successfully initiated scientific exchange and relations between the two universities."

From Partner Countries to Italy

  • Moroccan Professor (Mobility at an Italian University):

"This is one of the highlights of my long career as a university Professor. It allowed me to be exposed to the Italian teaching system and to conduct research outside Morocco."

  • Iraqi Professor (Mobility at the University of Palermo):

"I believe the project through Palermo University can enhance cooperation between academic institutions in Italy and Universities in the MENA region."

  • Moroccan Professor (Mobility at an Italian University):

"The project promoted cultural awareness and critical thinking, while the high level of student participation created an interactive learning environment. These elements clearly illustrate the project’s success."

Students: Broadening Academic Horizons and Overcoming Stereotypes

For students, a MARE mobility period is more than an academic credit; it is a transformative personal milestone. Traineeships and thesis research abroad allowed them to test their skills in real-world contexts and build a deeply nuanced understanding of the Mediterranean area.

International Students in Italy

  • Eya Yacoub (Master’s Student, University of Carthage, Tunisia | Traineeship at the University of Cagliari):

"My expectations were fully met and even exceeded, as the experience provided both theoretical enrichment and valuable practical exposure. It offered interdisciplinary insights that broadened my academic perspective and allowed me to connect my research interests with real-world contexts. The mobility deepened my understanding of Mediterranean cultural and linguistic dynamics, while helping me develop relevant academic and professional skills. It also contributed directly to the advancement of my master’s thesis and fostered meaningful intellectual exchange and intercultural awareness."

Italian Students in Morocco

  • Victor Nesta Gualeni (Student, University of Turin | Study & Thesis Research at the International University of Rabat):

"My expectations were fully met. The mobility gave me exactly the opportunity I was looking for. Being in Morocco gave concrete substance to ideas and themes that otherwise would have remained more abstract. I could observe the social, political, and cultural environment firsthand, and this made my understanding of the region much more grounded and nuanced. It strengthened my focus on the MENA region and added value to my academic and professional profile. Being in Morocco allowed me to move beyond stereotypes and preconceptions and to develop a more complex and informed understanding of the country and its society."

  • Anonymous Student (University of Turin | Thesis Research at the International University of Rabat):

"This experience served as a strategic bridge between my academic training and my professional aspirations. By integrating the advanced methodologies I acquired abroad with my current thesis work under the TNE MARE project, I have built a specialized foundation that is highly relevant to the evolving needs of the sector."

A Shared Future for Mediterranean Higher Education

These diverse testimonies demonstrate that the MARE project successfully achieves its main objective: fostering mutual understanding, enhancing the quality of higher education, and preparing a new generation of interconnected professionals. The alliance proves that sharing knowledge is indeed the most effective tool for regional growth.
