UNIPA Strengthens Ties with Moroccan Universities to Foster Sustainable Tourism
On September 8-9, 2025, 2 professors from the Sustainable Tourism course at the University of Palermo visited Morocco as part of their mobility activities under Work Package 7 (WP7) of the MARE Project, which focuses on sustainable tourism.
During their visit, the professors toured Hassan II University in Casablanca and Mohammed V University in Rabat. Both universities will send master’s and PhD students, as well as faculty members, to the University of Palermo to participate in a Winter School on Sustainable Tourism scheduled for November in Palermo.
The UNIPA delegation met rectors and administrative referees from the Moroccan universities to discuss academic and scientific collaborations. They also explored joint initiatives to promote sustainable tourism across the Mediterranean region. The meetings gave the delegation a chance to review and improve ongoing MARE Project activities and to explore new ways to cooperate and share knowledge.
The visit showed that the MARE Project provides a dynamic platform for academic collaboration and fosters synergy among Mediterranean universities. These exchanges strengthen existing partnerships and open new opportunities for cooperation in research, education, and sustainable development.
WP7 aims to enhance the quality and effectiveness of relationships between Italian universities and institutions in Jordan and Morocco, particularly in the field of tourism and hospitality. Sustainable tourism is a topic of growing importance in Mediterranean destinations, where high tourist pressure on specific sites can present significant challenges.
