Abstract
This essay explores Margaret Mead’s contributions to visual anthropology, emphasizing her use of photography and film in ethnographic research. Unlike many contemporaries, Mead saw audiovisual media as essential for documenting cultural expressions beyond written records. Her Bali fieldwork with Gregory Bateson pioneered the use of film and photography to analyze gestures, emotions, and rituals.
