Abstract

This analysis examines Günter Grass’s dystopian novel Die Rättin (The Rat), exploring its profound depiction of the self-induced destruction of humankind. Framed through an ecological critique, the narrative serves as a powerful commentary on the Anthropocene, highlighting how human dominance, techno-scientific hubris, and environmental exploitation inevitably culminate in global catastrophe. Through the post-apocalyptic dialogue between the human narrator and a female rat—the resilient inheritor of a ruined world—Grass deconstructs the illusion of human supremacy over nature. By intertwining themes of nuclear annihilation, forest dieback (Waldsterben), and ecological collapse, the novel confronts the irreversible consequences of human agency on the planet, offering a bleak yet vital warning about the ecological dead ends of modern civilization.
