Abstract
To properly examine the history and development of Muslim-Christian dialogue, we must focus on a primary factor that cannot be overlooked: the encounter between the two communities is an element contemplated by Islamic revelation itself; indeed, God has chosen to guide Muslims in their relationship with Christians. It is the Quran, first and foremost, that establishes the guiding principles for Muslim believers, and this contribution aims to present, albeit briefly, Muslim-Christian relations from the preaching of the Prophet Muhammad to the formation of Islamic theology in the Abbasid era. The texts of Muslim authors reveal the main themes of the dispute, which will develop, depending on the politically charged historical moments, in phases of polemics or dialogue.
