Abstract
Pavillonsystem is a term coined by Kaufmann to define Ledoux projects. It is a clear and interesting principle according to which several buildings have been built in the last two centuries: hospitals, schools, asylums, factories, laboratories, prisons. They are group of buildings whose layout is geometrical. They are separated by spaces which “tend to be” streets or squares but they are not. Neither they are gardens or parking lots, as in the modern usage. Buildings are different and separated, but they are thought of as a unique building. These areas constitute a no minor part of modern cities. Kahn has implemented this kind of building several times. From the Seventies this kind of buildings has been widely adopted by Aldo Rossi and the other Tendenza architects. The Technological Park in Verbania is a canonical example of Pavillonsystem.
