Abstract

The final years of the PCI were accompanied by a transformation of its political culture that reflected the crisis of the bipolar world. The chapter reconstructs this transformation by combining unpublished archival sources with the public debate on the forms of exit from, or refoundation of, a communist perspective. It analyses the economic, political, and institutional culture of the Italian left between Berlinguer’s death and the implosion of the Soviet Union.
