Emblemata Lilybaetana: L’effigie di Venere ‘pudica’

Abstract

A mid-2nd century AD statue from Lilybaeum is examined, which replies the sculptural type of the famous "Venere Landolina" from Syracuse. While the identification of the model as Syracusan "Callypige" is unfounded, both statues belong to the rich series of variants and derivations of the "Venus pudica" format.
