Abstract

The essay highlights the marginal status of island territories, focusing on the small islands of Sicily, and surveys the social, cultural, architectural, landscape-related, and urban practices through which communities transform these territories into innovative forms. It identifies *Restanza*—the act of choosing to stay—as a potential new paradigm for defining the contemporary condition of small islands.
