Abstract
Using data from the Italian Refugees and Asylum Seekers Survey, this study examines how work influences life satisfaction among refugees and asylum seekers across Italy. The findings reveal that having a formal job is strongly linked to higher life satisfaction, while barriers such as poor health and limited Italian language proficiency significantly reduce it. So- cial and family networks also play a crucial role: those with relatives or Italian friends in the country report greater satisfaction with life. Intere- stingly, moderate economic support, when paired with employment, appe- ars to enhance life satisfaction by fostering both autonomy and security. The results suggest that employment mediates many of these relationships, acting as a key pathway through which structural and personal factors shape refugees’ satisfaction in life. By highlighting the interplay between work, health, language, and social connections, this research underscores the need for policies that expand access to decent employment, invest in language training, and strengthen community support systems to promote lasting integration and well-being.
