Abstract

Immediately after national unification, museums played a fundamental role in defining identity within liberal Italy. This essay analyzes the contribution of Luigi Pigorini and Lamberto Loria to the creation of two museums that were crucial to the development of a sense of national identity: the Prehistoric and Ethnographic Museum and the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions.
