FABIO LA MANTIA

Leadership e Citizenship nei drammi storici di Ola Rotimi.

Abstract

Kurunmi and Ovonramwen Nogbaisi are historical dramas written by Ola Rotimi, one of the major writers of recent Nigerian postcolonial history. both works explore the moments of crisis that hit the Yoruba and Benin empires respectively in the nineteenth century. These are two political structures involved in a phase of transformation at multiple levels. within these contexts, Rotimi's attention focuses on the role and the authoritarian and totalitarian nature of leadership, embodied by the eponymous characters of the works discussed here and destined, in a tragic crescendo, to a desperate failure. but, precisely in the drama of the tragic hero, in the pathos of his characterization lies the specific charm of these pieces of art.
